The Science Fair is voluntary for students in grades K through 5. Students can work alone or with a partner (friend, classmate, sibling).  Students display their projects at assigned stations in the auditorium or hallways.  Each project is visited by a Scientific Reviewer who asks questions for the young scientists to discuss their discoveries. Families and friends tour the auditorium and hallways to visit the creative projects.  Each young scientist receives a certificate and an award to commemorate the event.

Thank you for your support and participation in the Science Fair!

Science Fair Volunteers Still Needed

E-mail Print PDF

The Haynes Science Fair is only 10 days away and there are still many positions that need to be filled! Volunteering for a ½ hour shift is EASY and very important to the success of the event. Volunteers are needed to help set-up, to help out at the food table and to serve as reviewers. Our coordinators will let you know exactly what to do.  We also need parents to provide bake sale items. Support your Lil’ Scientist and please consider volunteering, it would be a great help and very rewarding! Click here to sign up online.

For Set-up information, please contact: Kim Kelly

For information about Food Table help, please contact Kim Lewis or Ruth Miller

For information about being a Reviewer please contact Liz Darley

Science Fair Parent Letter

E-mail Print PDF

Dear Haynes Parents,

We are very excited to be organizing the fifth annual Haynes Elementary School Science Fair!   Last year’s Science Fair turned out to be a success with almost 240 students presenting a variety of interesting science projects.  The goal is to encourage and promote a joy of science, exploration and discovery.  Participation in the science fair is voluntary for students in Grades K through 5.  Students must register on line in advance to participate.

Each project should bear the fruits of the student’s own labor.  Parents and faculty are encouraged to assist, but please, only help in an advisory role. Here is a summary of some of the details:

  • Actual date: Wednesday, March 10th, 2010, 6:00 – 8:00 PM

  • Students must register online in advance to participate; deadline for submittal of registrations is February 5th, 2010.

  • The Science Fair is voluntary for students in grades K thru 5. Students can work alone or with a partner (friend, classmate, sibling)

  • Projects should be inquiry- based and experimental

  • Projects should be done by the student at home (teachers/parents may consult)

  • Projects should be simple and inexpensive

  • Projects should not involve animals or chemicals that are hazardous or may cause a mess

  • Students should use large poster boards for their main display with space in front for supporting materials (models, experiments, etc)

  • Science project idea books and other reference material will be made available during library time from January 25th through January 29th, 2010

  • Students are also encouraged to use the internet and the Goodnow Library to help identify a topic

  • The projects will not be judged, rather science reviewers (parent volunteers, high school students, family friends) will encourage students to explain their project the night of the fair

  • All students will receive certificates and ribbons

We ask that you encourage your child and monitor his or her progress along the way. Your support is key to a successful project, but please do not allow your involvement to extend any further in order to assure equity and promote student learning!  Guide your child whenever and wherever you can, but let the final project reflect your child’s individual effort and design.

We welcome anyone who would like to volunteer their time or offer suggestions. Furthermore, you are all invited to come see the final result on March 10th.  Thank you in advance and please contact Michael Dufault or Jeff Brener for questions and/or more information.
