The Metco Program is a grant program in part funded by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is a voluntary program intended to expand educational opportunities, increase diversity, and reduce racial isolation, by permitting students in certain cities to attend public schools in other communities that have agreed to participate. The Program has been in existence since 1966 and was originally funded through a grant by the Carnegie Foundation and United States Office of Education. In that year the first Metco legislation was filed, METCO Inc. was established, and seven school districts began accepting the first two hundred Metco students. Currently, there are about 3,300 students participating in 33 school districts in metropolitan Boston and at four school districts outside Springfield.

Kim Lewis, METCO co-chair
On Friday, Feb. 5, come join Boston students and Sudbury students in some Origami fun at the METCO Friends and Family Breakfast. At 8am in Mrs. Dolan’s room, we’ll try our hands at making paper balloons and other fun paper shapes. No PhDs in paper manipulating necessary! Sudbury students can buy breakfast for $1.00. This is an excellent opportunity to meet those students who travel to Sudbury from Boston even if they are not in your grade or classroom. RSVP to Angie Knightly or Kim Lewis if your child plans to attend. Parents are welcome.

The Metco Program At Haynes
Monday, 25 January 2010 07:24
Kim Lewis
This year at Haynes we have ten students from Boston in grades one through four. On the first Friday of every month, the school community is invited to come to school at 8 am to participate in a variety of activities with the METCO students, who arrive early at school. Some of our activities have included hearing a concert featuring two third grade teachers, playing outside, making origami objects and paper airplanes, and doing crafts. After the fun, at 8:30, students can buy breakfast from the cafeteria and fill up before starting the school day. For the past two years, we have had a potluck dinner and playdate in Boston to allow the Sudbury students to visit with their peers in their Boston neighborhood. These events are open to everyone in the Haynes community and all are welcome to participate in one or all events.
For upcoming events, see the red box on this page. Contact Kim Lewis or Angie Knightly for more information.
